We are Helping Kids in Foster Care Learn How to Sing and Play Music

Many foster kids in Arizona and around the U.S. experience immense sadness and loneliness because they do not have a family to share their life with. Kids in foster care are patiently waiting for a family to offer them a life of love, safety, and happiness. We are trying to help kids in foster care experience something that is incredible at providing joy, increase academic performance, and decrease stress levels – learning to play a musical instrument or learning how to sing! I hope you are doing well! It’s an incredibly busy time of year for most of us, so I appreciate you taking the time to read our newsletter. Last month I shared about what foster children experience when they go back to school. This month, I’d like to highlight an additional challenge that these vulnerable children endure.  Once children are removed from their homes to protect them, they are housed in shelters, group homes, and foster homes. Unfortunately, for one reason or another, they are forced to move an average twice a year. They pack their meager possessions in a garbage bag, backpack, or shabby suitcase. Some children quit bothering to unpack. They also quit bothering to make friends, trust adults, or connect with teachers. All Kids Need Music Non Profit Foster Care Music Program

All Kids Need Music, a music non profit, is changing foster children’s lives through the transformative power of therapeutic music lessons. Watch the recent KOLD News 13 television interview about All Kids Need Music connecting children in foster care with music teachers trained in trauma. Music teacher Karen Shaffstall can already see her student progressing from just one month of lessons. “She grasps everything I say to her,” Shaffstall said. “She’s on the edge of her seat listening.” The music teachers are helping students develop musical skills and a meaningful bond.
